Do you know how to dress a wound?
Getting a wound is the order of the day, the rush and the accelerated life we lead leads us to not dedicate the necessary time to its cure.
It is important to know the nature of the wound. The basic notions to perform a cure are:
1. Clean the wound
Clean the wound with water and neutral soap, or you can irrigate it with saline, which maintains the PH of the skin
Remove foreign bodies in the wound from the inside out, with a soft gauze.
Dry it with gentle touches
2. Prevent infections
Clean the wound at each dressing
Use an antiseptic 2-3 times a day, for 24-72h. In these cases use povidone iodine or chlorhexidine.
3. Healing and protection
In a first degree burn, a transparent wet dressing should be used to see its evolution
In an abrasion or burn, dry or wet dressings are used. If the wound needs protection against mechanical irritation use padded dressings for added protection
In a cut, if it requires suturing you should go to the hospital, but if it is not so deep, suture strips should be applied to keep the edges together and promote healing.
Post-surgical sterile dressings are used on dry and clean skin. Moisturize and take care of the surrounding skin is important to avoid injuries
And last but not least, the blisters on the feet. It is necessary to use wet healing dressings also called hydrocolloids.
